Mountain Air | June's Little Worlds Print Club Release
Every month, I create a new painting for my Little Worlds Print Club, a monthly art subscription designed to bring a little more wonder, nostalgia, and imagination into your home.
June's print, Mountain Air, was inspired by a recent motorcycle trip through the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Before my first visit, I admittedly imagined South Dakota as endless prairie with little to see. While the drive across much of the state might reinforce that assumption, everything changes when you reach the western side. Towering pine trees, winding mountain roads, waterfalls, canyons, desert, and hidden valleys quickly reveal a landscape unlike anywhere else in the Midwest.
One of my favorite parts of traveling through the Black Hills is admiring the homes tucked into the mountainsides. Cozy A-frame cabins, rustic log homes, and charming cottages all seem to belong perfectly within the forest. Mountain Air became my own imagined little neighborhood, where winding stone paths connect cabins hidden beneath the pines, gardens thrive in the summer sunshine, and even a family of black bears quietly wanders through the valley. (Despite many trips to South Dakota, I still haven't been lucky enough to spot one!)
A charming watercolor inspired by South Dakota's Black Hills, featuring cozy cabins, towering pines, winding stone paths, and hidden woodland details that invite viewers to slow down and explore.
The Inspiration Behind Little Worlds
When I first started creating my Little Worlds series, I wanted to paint places that felt both real and imagined.
Each painting is inspired by places I've traveled, quiet moments I've experienced, or little details that have captured my attention. Rather than recreating those places exactly as they are, I combine memories, imagination, and storytelling into whimsical landscapes that invite you to slow down and explore.
I hope each piece encourages you to linger a little longer, discovering new details every time you look at it. Much like the I Spy books many of us loved as children, these little worlds are meant to be explored. Maybe you'll spot a hidden cabin, a tiny birdhouse, or a winding trail that disappears into the trees. Every painting is filled with small stories waiting to be found, inviting you to notice something new each time you return.
More than anything, I hope these paintings remind you that inspiration can be found almost anywhere. Sometimes all it takes is stepping outside your routine, visiting somewhere new, or simply seeing the familiar with fresh eyes.
As an artist, that's what continues to inspire my own work. I travel because it fills my creative cup. Every road trip, hike, small town, and scenic overlook becomes another collection of memories that eventually finds its way into my paintings. My hope is that my artwork inspires others to embrace their own creative freedom…to explore, to dream, to create, and to find beauty in the little moments that make life meaningful.
